After Forever foi originalmente formada em 1995 sob o nome Apocalypse, seu gênero era orientado ao death metal. Com a entrada da atual vocalista Floor Jansen em 1997, o estilo da banda mudou em disposição a dar ênfase para sua voz. Até aquele momento a banda era composta por Floor Jansen, Mark Jansen, Sander Gommans, Luuk van Gerven, Jack Driessen e Joep Beckers.
O After Forever demonstra ser uma das maiores bandas de seu gênero, revolucionando os conceitos de metal, sem se limitar à fronteiras comerciais.
